Approximately 18 million Americans experience obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a sleep disorder that can cause serious problems such as excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue, memory loss and lack of concentration. These individuals have an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure.
Dr. Masdon Talks About Inspire Therapy.
What Is Inspire?
Inspire is an implantable device, like a pacemaker, that monitors your breathing patterns while you sleep. It delivers mild stimulation to the nerve that controls movement of the tongue and airway muscles, which keeps the airway open and prevents OSA.
The device contains three parts: a small generator, a breathing sensor lead and a stimulation lead. Patients use a small handheld remote to control the device, turning it on or off and pausing it during the night if necessary. The stimulation is typically painless, and its strength can always be adjusted using the remote if needed.
Inspire Therapy Might be Right for You if:
- You have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
- You are unable to use or get consistent benefit from CPAP
- You are not significantly overweight
- You are over the age of 18
Your doctor will also evaluate your overall health status and perform a physical examination of your airway to determine if Inspire therapy might be a suitable alternative for you.
Inspire therapy monitors every breath you take while you sleep. Based on your breathing patterns, the system delivers mild stimulation to key airway muscles, which allows the airway to remain open during sleep. The Inspire system is fully implanted and consists of a breathing sensor lead and a stimulation lead powered by a small battery. Using the handheld Inspire remote, simply turn the therapy on before bed and off when you wake up.
